LA: Tom of Finland - Gay Liberation and the Shaping of Homoerotic Desire in Post-WWII America

Please RSVP: Using the form to the right, indicate school(s) and Degree Year(s) under “Organization”

Architect of some of the most iconic and readily recognizable imagery of post-World War II gay culture, Finnish artist Touko Laaksonen produced thousands of evocative, fantasy-driven representations of masculine desire that were disseminated worldwide. Operating at a time when the closet was still the norm and when no such thing as a gay community existed, Laaksonen – under the famous pseudonym of “Tom of Finland” – provided an ocular feast for men and women alike. In doing so, he helped set the stage for an emerging gay leather culture and inspired such artists as Kenneth Anger, Andy Warhol, post-punk riot grrrl G. B. Jones, Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, and Madonna (as clearly evidenced in her bold, best-selling coffee-table book Sex).

Honoring the legacy of Tom of Finland and his status as a significant figure of twentieth-century erotic art, please join us on October 11 for a tour of the artist’s extraordinary Los Angeles home furnished to the brim with original works of art and other objects from Tom’s life and time. While the artist made no secret of his preference for men, the tour will also include rarely seen portrayals of women and Tom’s simultaneous catering for the female gaze. The tour will be followed by a lively, intellectual discussion exploring Tom’s work and the rampant discrimination against sexually provocative art.

Where: TOM House, 1421 Laveta Terrace, Los Angeles, CA 90026 (Echo Park)
When: Saturday, October 11th; 2pm – 5pm (Tour starts promptly at 2pm)
Parking: Free Street Parking

Please RSVP on the right if you plan to attend. Because we are hosting this as an intercollegiate event open to alumni of multiple schools, please write your college/university and degree year in the "Organization" field.
